The ANA\C Advocacy Institute is an 8-month program for members in good standing, who demonstrate a passion for policy development and advocacy and understanding of the state legislative processes with a specific focus on advancing the profession of nursing through policy, legislation, and regulations.

This individual must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum Baccalaureate level degree in nursing 
  • Minimum of 2 years continuous membership in ANA\C
  • Ability to commit a minimum of 2 hours per week toward ANA\C-AI time including but not limited to, meetings, ZOOM calls, attendance at legislative sessions, BRN meeting, etc. 
  • Ability to construct, submit and/or present comprehensive reports at ANA\C events
  • Public speaking ability, including the ability to speak in front of large groups. 

The ANA\C-AI participants will work very closely with ANA\C Executive Director, Lobbyist, and Staff to follow policy, legislation and/or regulation leads significant for nursing, healthcare organizations, and institutions; provide insights, develop goals, strategies, and tactics to advocate; and be the voice of health, public, or nursing policy at the local, regional, institutional or state level.




  1. Attend the Advocacy Institute on April 19-22, 2020, including ANA\C Lobby Day (April 20) and Increasing Nursing Presence in Policy and Politics Conference (April 21) 
  2. Develop and provide policy expertise at legislative arenas and/or regulatory agencies, and deliver presentations at ANA\C meeting(s) 
  3. Collaborate with ANA\C Executive Director, Lobbyist, and Staff to identify focused policy and advocacy issues based on ANA\C Public Policy Agenda.
  4. Present background information, draft position statements, letters, and talking points on priority issues in healthcare, public policy, nursing, and social justice issues based on ANA\C Public Policy Agenda.
  5. Network attend meet-n-greet with key legislators and develop influence through collaboration. 
  6. Attend a minimum of 4 BRN meetings to support ANA\C advocacy.
  7. Submit one poster abstract.
  8. Serve on ANA\C committees, create and lead task forces, discussion groups, or issue-driven projects based on ANA\C Public Policy Agenda.
  9. Represent ANA\C’s position in any and all identified advocacy areas.
  10. Develop or collaborate on webinars, workshops, or discussion panels to educate nurses on policy, legislation, and/or regulation matters that advance the profession of nursing.
