- Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program:
The 2012 application cycle for Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP) is currently open. THe NELRP is a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Title VIII nursing workforce program which ANA supports through its lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill. The deadline to apply is February 15, 2012. To learn more visit www.hrsa.gov
- Schedule of Rule Making Proceeding Affecting Nonphysician Medical Practitioners (NMPs) DHCS-06-017:
Title 22 Amend Section: 51240, 51305, 51476. These regulations remove the restrictive language in Department of Regulations that require a limit of NP's per physicians. The proposed rules change the regulations to state that the number of physicians to licensees will be determined by the practitioners practice act. NP's who are dispensing must sign up with a physician. A physician cannot sign-up more that 4 NP's. This is a step forward for NP's in our state. ANA\C suspects that Medicine will oppose. ANA\C is planning on submitting testimony and is asking EVERYONE to submit a comment too. The public comment period ends February 17, 2012. - Governor's Budget: The Governor has submitted a proposed budget which will have triggers dependent on passing a tax increase in November. Of concern is the discussion of staffing ratios in State hospitals. Read the proposed budget. - Governor Appoints Department of Consumer Affairs Director and Others: Denise Brown of Fair Oaks has been appointed director of the DCA. Brown was an advisor to the executive officer and staf of the California Air Resources Board from 1977-2009. She has served in a variety of capacities within the Department and her confirmation will require Senate confirmation. Brown is a Democrat.
Awet Kidane of Elk Grove has been appointed chief deputy director at the DCA. Kidane was chief of staff to Assemblymember Steven Bradford since 2009. This position does not required confirmation. Kidane is a Democrat.
Reichel Everhart of Sacramento has been appointed deputy director for board and bureau relations at the DCA. Everhart has been senior advisor to the DCA director since 2011. This position does not require confirmation. Everhart is a Democrat.
- BRN Survey of Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives:
The CA BRN has published a report on its Survey of NPs and CNMs. This survey was conducted in 2010 by researchers at the Center for Health Professions. The report provides information demographics, employment, involvement in the delivery of primary care, scope of practice, and satisfaction with their work. You may read the report here.
- WorkForce Trends: An article written by David Auerback, Peter Buerhaus, and Douglas Staiger published in Health Affairs December 2011 provides information about the surge in people aged 23-26 entering the nurse workforce indicating the supply is growing faster than projected.
