Advancing equitable staffing through ethical AI and policy innovation.

PRELIMINARY REPORT

The Impact of AI on Equitable Staffing

This preliminary report investigates how artificial intelligence can be used to advance equity in nursing staffing, hiring, scheduling, and patient assignments. Guided by organizational justice theory, it evaluates how AI systems can promote fairness across distributive, procedural, interpersonal, and informational dimensions of decision-making.

The report synthesizes emerging research and case studies demonstrating how data-driven tools can address staffing inequities, reduce bias, and improve transparency. It also identifies ethical and policy considerations - emphasizing the need for inclusive design, safeguards against algorithmic bias, and meaningful nurse involvement in implementation and governance.

“We must have the courage to ask whether our current staffing practices are equitable. If they are not, it is our collective responsibility to advocate for change - leveraging technology, refining processes, and empowering people.”
