Catalyst to Case Study: Creating our Racism in Nursing Assessment (Panel Discussion)

Join ANA\C Fellows, Fatima Arastu and Carla Stanley, as they host a panel discussing how the group formed, created a shared mission, identified a gap, and created a solution within 12 months. The focus will be on the timeline, decision-making, and strategy that led to case study opportunities for ANA\California's Racism in Nursing and Healthcare Assessment.

Objectives:

• How to convene leaders of diverse experiences and backgrounds to a common goal
• How to organize and navigate information to create action
• How to create opportunities to share your proposed solution

Fatima Arastu is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Nursing Practice, Executive Program Class of Spring 2023 and Post Master's Nurse Educator Certificate from John Hopkins School of Nursing. She is a Nurse Manager of a Surgical Telemetry Unit at Stanford Health Care-ValleyCare, California, and also serves as a council member for the hospital Inclusion, Diversity & Health Equity (IDHE) council. As a nurse leader, she strongly feels called to be the advocate and role model to create a work environment that promotes diversity, inclusion, and equity for the workforce.

Fellow Carla Stanley MBA-HC, BSN, RN, FACHE, HCM-BC, NEA-BC, NE-BC

Carla Stanley has worked in 6 different states, and served from bedside RN to Chief Nurse Officer in For-Profit, Not-for-Profit, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Ambulatory Care, Trauma Centers, Magnet, Children's and Critical Access Facilities. She understands the many nuances of healthcare and is motivated by the unique position that her profession as a Registered Nurses places her in, which is to work toward narrowing the gap between the Social Determinants of Health and those populations most negatively impacted.

Dr. Quanna Batiste-Brown DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Dr. Quanna Batiste-Brown serves as Chief Nursing Officer of Ambulatory Care at UCLA Health where she oversees nursing care at more than 250 ambulatory clinics. She is also Adjunct Associate Professor at the UCLA School of Nursing lecturing in the DNP program on the topic of Organizational and System Leadership and Disseminating Scholarship.

Dr. Batiste-Brown’s community outreach includes founding a Medical Assistant Program as a partnership between UCLA Health and UCLA Extension. Dr. Batiste truly utilizes her education to excel professionally, provide inspirational leadership to others, and provide service to our community.

Dr. Charlotte Gullap-Moore DNP, MSN, APRN, ANP-BC

Dr. Gullap-Moore is an Adult Nurse Practitioner presently delivering primary care to the adult / geriatric patient population along with chronic pain management for the Santa Barbara County healthcare community.  She has 21 years of experience serving in the nursing profession with the past eleven years serving as a clinician and owner of Moore On Health. In addition to her clinical work, she has distinguished herself by serving on several board-level leadership roles within nursing organizations, various community non-profits, two appointed positions in Santa Barbara, and the other within the California Board of Nursing. 

Dr. Gullap-Moore views her health care professional service as a personal calling - to give back to the next generation of nursing leaders, to strengthen the advanced practice nursing profession, and to eradicate antiquated processes that limit equitable access to care and professional representation.

Kim Brown Sims MBA, RN, FACHE, NEA-BC

Kim Brown Sims has been in healthcare for over three decades in various roles from the bedside to the boardroom, most recently as a chief nurse executive in the providence and tenet systems and with the state of California opening a 400-bed alternate care facility at the onset of COVID. She is also the founder of KBS Leadership Consulting, a workforce and career strategist excelling at engagement to achieve happy, inclusive, and highly reliable organizations.

Dr. Anita Girard DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Dr. Girard is an experienced healthcare leader with a demonstrably successful history of working in the hospital & healthcare industry. Skilled in nursing management, evidence-based practice, patient advocacy, nursing education, mentoring new leaders and driving quality clinical outcomes. Significant experience related to LEAN implementation and ANCC Magnet Designation. Actively engaged in local, state, national and international communities to promote the nursing profession and improve the quality of healthcare. Strong business development professional with a Doctor of Nursing Practice focused in Executive Leadership from University of San Francisco. Dr. Girard is also current ANA\California President.

Jared Fesler

Jared Fesler is ANA\California's Communication & Programs Manager with marketing and startup experience spanning nearly a decade. He currently heads up campaigns, public relations, events, and website development for ANA\California and is project manager for both the Advocacy Institute Fellowship program and the Racism in Nursing and Healthcare Workgroup. Prior to ANA\California, Jared was the Co-Founder of Credder.com, a news credibility review site.

Tasha Haley BSN, RN

Tasha Haley has been an RN for 17 years and working in healthcare for 20 years. The majority of her career has been in oncology both pediatric and adult. She is currently sharing her experience and knowledge as a nursing adjunct professor in the Pasadena area. Tasha believes nursing gives you many opportunities and provides multiple pathways for development. If you are willing to seek out and take the opportunities for growth the sky is the limit in nursing.

Samantha Gambles Farr MSN, FNP-C, CCRN, RNFA

Samantha Gambles Farr has served healthcare for over 20 years. She currently works as a Nurse Practitioner Intensivist in the Surgical Intensive Care Nurse Practitioner for UC San Diego in the Department of Trauma, Burns, Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. She serves as Chair of the Nurse Practitioner Advisory Committee (NPAC) to the Board of Registered Nurses (BRN).

From Taiwan to Texas to California and beyond, Ms. Gambles Farr has addressed conferences such as SECC-Best of Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress 2021; the National Association of Black Nurses Inc. 2019; and California Association for Nurse Practitioners 2017. Her purpose is to provide service and care to others using compassion, evidence-based practice, and community-experienced learnings in an effort to improve access and equity to healthcare.

Nancy W. Parker MSN, RN, PHN, CNL

Mrs. Nancy Parker has 35 years experience in Ambulatory Care as a leader, educator, and author. She helped lead the RN Transition to Practice Program in Ambulatory Setting at University of San Francisco, and co-authored several Ambulatory Residency programs. Currently she serves as a consultant of Ambulatory Care Apprenticeship Program for HealthImpact and is a DEI Taskforce Member for American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing.
