As the leading state professional nursing association representing the interests of nearly half a million registered nurses in California, we are incredibly saddened by Sunday's early morning news of the mass shooting that took place just a block away from the State Capitol in Sacramento, CA. Gun violence is a public health threat and will need a health-first approach to ensuring our communities are safe.

Unfortunately, mass shootings and other tragedies have become all too common in this country. While we understand the issue of gun violence is complex and deeply rooted in our culture, gun violence remains a leading cause of premature death in the United States. Steps can and should be taken to gain insight into the causes of gun violence and assess the impact of interventions.

ANA\California stands with those individuals, families, and communities impacted by gun violence and with all the nurses and healthcare professionals who provide care.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marketa Houskova

Executive Director, ANA\California
